It’s three days until Christmas and you’re looking for last-minute gift ideas for tech-inclined friends and colleagues. You decide on a USB drive, but how do figure out what’s best to get — attraction to hammers, ability to open beer bottles, or some other, clearly inferior metric entirely? Kristofer Brozio at Test Freaks Blog took 21 drives of various sizes (5 each of 1, 2, 4 and 8GB and one 64GB Patriot Magnum) and models and tested their transfer speeds. Top marks went to the 4GB OCZ, Sandisk, Lexar, and Super Talent models, as well as the 1GB SanDIsk. Given the small sample size, we can’t really say if the speeds were the result of the capacities of the drive or the company who makes them, but it’s definitely some flash-based food for thought. The Samsung YP-P3 is now official, and the images of the press are much better paint that leaked a few weeks ago and we promised a worthy successor to the Samsung YP-P2. It is not because they miss the show are many and from all angles, an almost perfect player as if it had taken Apple, it would be front page of national newspapers in circulation. Hopefully not take a long time coming to our country.

The Samsung YP-P3 is a new step forward towards the Korean music player perfect. I think it was a success that has been removed by order, as should the other manufacturers, the role of second behind Apple’s iPod and music players is raising a lot of speed that exceeds the features and functionality of the Apple players , Stuck with the exception of the iPod Touch.

It’s not clear what has changed at this point, but a brand spankin’ new firmware for the Storm versioned 4.7.0.83 has just leaked out onto the interwebs. The good news is that — if our math is right, anyway — 83 is a considerably higher number than 76, so we’re hoping that this cut incorporates all the changes in 4.7.0.76 that didn’t make it into 75, the upgrade officially released by Verizon not long ago. Never mind those eBay prices for the Kindle, and don’t pay any attention to the $399 sticker attached to Sony’s Reader — instead, feast your eyes on this gem. The $259 eSlick is expected to arrive courtesy of Foxit this January, and if you jump in early, you’ll be able to get it for just $229. Sure, it doesn’t include that fancy connectivity like on the Kindle, but we suspect you’ll get over the lack of subscriptions pretty quick given all the coin you’ll save up front. The unit is said to be around the size “of a medium paperback,” checking in at 0.4-inches think and featuring a 6-inch 800 x 600 resolution display. The panel itself is made by the same firm that provides panels for Amazon, and it’ll ship with 128MB of inbuilt memory along with a 2GB SD card. As for longevity, you can expect to get about 8,000 turns before it caves from exhaustion, and if your eyes tire, the unit can double as an MP3 player. Not that we haven’t seen laptops with multiple screens before, but this is a ThinkPad, people. You know, an all-business, totally not flashy ThinkPad. Hidden deep within a Lenovo Asia-Pacific hardware announcement is something we’d swear was a prank if it were hosted anywhere other than IBM.com, but it looks like the dual-screen W700 is for real. Reportedly, the machine will feature a 17-inch WUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) primary display along with a 10.6-inch WXGA (1,280 x 768) secondary panel. Think SideShow, just jacked up on whatever Clemens and McGwire were using. The rest of the specifications are swell but expected, but the tidbits we’re really reaching for (price and availability, naturally) are nowhere to be found. Can you say “want.”?

For the podcaster-on-the-go, there’s always a need for a portable microphone to get through less-than-ideal situations. It’s not clear exactly how widespread the problem is, but it looks like at least some Dell Mini 9s are shipping with smaller batteries than they should be — a situation that, you may remember, also plagued some Eee PCs a little ways back. According to jkkmobile, while the all the batteries are labeled a 32Wh, 4 cell batteries, a quick software test of their own Mini 9 revealed that the battery was in fact only 24Wh, which certainly cuts into the promised four-hour runtime a bit. Apparently, the folks on the MyDellMini forums were able to surmise that batteries with labels beginning in “CN” are the proper 32Wh models, while those that begin with “KR” are the smaller ones. Of course, there’s no way to check that until you actually get one in your hands, so we’re hoping Dell steps in to clear things up a bit.
